How much is owed for rent?

The tenancy is a fixed term tenancy until 1 April 2026. The tenant vacated the tenancy on or about 30 January 2026. The tenant accepted the landlord’s claim for rent owing to today’s date - $8,434.31.
The tenant will remain liable for rent until a new tenancy starts or until the end date of the fixed term, whichever is sooner.

Is the tenant responsible for the damage to the premises?

A landlord must prove that damage to the premises occurred during the tenancy and is more than fair wear and tear. If this is established, to avoid liability, the tenant must prove they did not carelessly or intentionally cause or permit the damage. Tenants are liable for the actions of people at the premises with their permission 1 .
The tenant’s moving contractor caused a hole in a wall that requires repair. The tenant accepted the landlord’s quoted cost for the repair. I allow this claim by consent.
As the application is successful, I have reimbursed the landlord the filing fee. Name suppression
The landlord did not seek name suppression. The tenant sought name suppression. Ordinarily she would not have been eligible for name suppression as she has not successfully defended the application. 1 See sections 40(2)(a), 41 and 49B Residential Tenancies Act 1986 (RTA). However, due to the need for protection arising from a domestic situation I have granted the tenant name suppression.
